Suhum Municipal Assembly Distributes Sanitary Pads to Schools, Educates Girls on Menstrual Hygiene

The Suhum Municipal Assembly, under the leadership of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, today, embarked on a critical health and empowerment initiative aimed at supporting adolescent girls across the municipality. The project involved the distribution of sanitary pads to selected basic and junior high schools, coupled with a comprehensive education campaign on menstrual hygiene management.
The initiative, which took place in several schools across the municipality, was part of the Assembly’s ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality, reducing school absenteeism among girls, and breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation
Speaking at one of the beneficiary schools, the MCE emphasized the importance of menstrual hygiene in the overall health and academic performance of girls. “Menstrual hygiene is not a luxury—it is a necessity. No girl should have to miss school or feel ashamed because of her natural biological process,” she said.
Over 1,000 sanitary pad packs were distributed, and health professionals from the Suhum Municipal Health Directorate were on hand to deliver practical sessions on menstrual hygiene, addressing myths and misconceptions while encouraging open dialogue among students and teachers.
The MCE also noted that the assembly will continue to collaborate with partners, including NGOs, health experts, and educational stakeholders, to sustain the campaign and expand its reach.
Teachers and students expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its impact on boosting the confidence and dignity of young girls.
This project reflects the Suhum Municipal Assembly’s dedication to inclusive development, youth empowerment, and the health and well-being of every child in the municipality.
