The Suhum Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, conducted site inspections at Ateibu on 3rd February, 2026 following the intelligence gathered regarding illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey” in the area.

The inspection was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) to assess the veracity of the reports and also to gather evidence of potential environmental damage and illegal activities. Upon arriving at the designated area, the inspection team observed:

* Evidence of Pitting and Stream Alteration: The team found multiple pits dug within the area, indicating the potential for mineral extraction. Furthermore, the natural flow of a nearby stream had been obstructed, raising concerns about the impact on water resources and the local ecosystem.
* Absence of Individuals, Presence of Equipment: While no individuals were present at the time of the inspection, the team discovered a water pumping machine and the presence of water holes. These findings suggest the potential for ongoing galamsey activities, which could be ongoing or recently abandoned.

The Suhum Municipal Assembly views these findings with grave concern. The blockage of the stream is an egregious example of the environmental degradation, and water holes is a serious act for the environment. Illegal mining activities have the potential to contaminate water sources, destroy vegetation, and cause irreversible damage to the local environment and the livelihood of the people of Suhum.

The Suhum Municipal Assembly has pledged zero tolerance for galamsey and is committed to combating any act that has the potential to promote galamsey in the Municipality to protect the environment. Further investigations are underway to:

* Identify the perpetrators: The assembly will work with security agencies to identify and apprehend those involved in the suspected illegal mining activities.

The Municipal Assembly encourages the public to provide any information that may assist in the ongoing investigations to apprehend those who have been attempting to engage in galamsey in any part of the Suhum Municipality.

We urge all residents to report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining to the appropriate police, the MCE and other security agencies for appropriate action. The protection of our environment is a shared responsibility, and we must work together to safeguard our natural resources for future generations.
