The Suhum Municipal Assembly in collaboration with Eastern Regional Peace Council has organized it’s international women’s day of peace and disarmament on 24th May, 2024 which was under the theme; Strengthening Ghana’s Democracy, the role of women in ensuring peaceful elections.
The Deputy CEO of the Middle Belt Development Authority, Mrs. Joyce Opoku Boateng Representing the Chief of Staff Hon. Frema Opare Praised women for their significant contributions to national development. She emphasized the importance of the celebration in highlighting the role of women in promoting peace and progress. She noted that the theme of the event was particularly relevant as Ghana gears up for the 2024 general elections.
The Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Margaret Darko Darkwa stated that women play a crucial role in fostering peace and stability in our beloved nation Ghana and the world at large. She before call for increased in empowerment and participation of women to ensure continued development. She highlighted the significant impact of women’s contributions to national development, using her own achievements as MCE for eight successive years as an example. She encouraged young adults and other women to push themselves and strive for leadership positions in various fields.
The Eastern Regional Peace Council Chairman, Prof. Mark Owusu Boad urged all Ghanaians to embrace peace as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections. He advised the public to disregard politicians who use abusive language during campaigns and called on all politicians to use their platforms to promote peace, free from insults and personal attacks, to ensure the continued socio-economic development of the country.
The Diplomatic Ambassador of WOLMI to the UN, H.E DR. Rejoice Wodomdedzi Foli emphasized that, research suggested that increasing women’s representation in political decision making bodies leads to better governance outcomes because women leaders often bring different leadership styles, communication skills and problem solving approaches which can contributes to make effective and inclusive governance. She add that when women are in position of political leadership, they serve as role models which inspires other women and girls to participate in politics and public life.
