The Suhum Government Hospital on Thursday, June 5, 2025, played host to the newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Lydia Ohenewa Sara, as she embarked on a familiarization tour of key institutions within the municipality.
Led by the District Coordinating Director, the visit provided the MCE with an opportunity to interact with the hospital’s management and staff as she settles into her new role. The Municipal Director of Health, Mr. Fredrick Ofosu, extended a warm welcome to the MCE and her team, commending the move as a step toward deepening collaboration between the Assembly and the local health sector.
“This visit marks a significant moment for partnership-building,” Mr. Ofosu noted, adding that it could pave the way for stronger support in delivering quality healthcare services to the people of Suhum.
During the meeting, Medical Superintendent Dr. Ahmed Tijani Sulemana shed light on critical challenges affecting the hospital’s operations. He highlighted the urgent need to expand the Accident and Emergency unit, citing the high volume of cases, particularly from the Accra–Kumasi highway, which has overwhelmed the existing facilities.
Dr. Sulemana also flagged concerns over the hospital’s lack of consistent ambulance services, which hampers timely emergency response and patient referrals. He further called for the completion of the stalled “Ghana First” infrastructure project to ease congestion and improve service delivery.
Another key issue raised was staff morale. The superintendent proposed the introduction of a performance-based Excellence Awards scheme to encourage and recognize dedicated health workers.
In her closing remarks, Hon. Lydia Ohenewa Sara expressed gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the pressing issues raised. She assured management of her readiness to work in close partnership with all relevant agencies, stressing that improving healthcare in Suhum remains a top agenda item for her.
