The Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Lydia ohenewa Sarah,has held an emergency meeting to address concerns over illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Lydia Ohenewa, stated that there are currently no galamsey activities within the Suhum Municipality.

According to her, some areas where mining is taking place are located in the neighbouring Abuakwa South Municipality, although they share boundaries with Suhum and other nearby municipalities.

She explained that during a recent tour of the municipality, an excavator was spotted heading towards Essase, an area under Abuakwa South. She subsequently alerted the Suhum Police Command, leading to the arrest of the excavator operator for investigation.

The MCE Hon. Lydia ohenewa Sarah also disputed claims attributed to the Suhum Member of Parliament, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, regarding illegal mining in Suhum. She urged the MP to consult the Municipal Assembly and allow proper investigations before making such claims.
